The hibserv.exe file is the process called Compaq Power Management Service that is used by the application Compaq Power Management created by Compaq Computer Corporation. It is not a core file for Windows. It can hide itself. Compaq Power Management Products manage and protect computer systems for enterprises and individual workstations. It enables you to protect, manage, communicate with the network and guarantee maximum integrity of data. These products include the rack-mountable uninterruptible power supplies, tower uninterruptible power supplies, power distribution unit, multi-server card and scalable card. Rack-mountable UPS provides maximum uptime in case of power problems for rack-based computers. Tower UPS offers advanced power protection for whole network such as routers, workstations, hubs and servers that need maximum fault tolerance and uptime in power problem events. Compaq Power Management is an integrated, alert response within Compaq Insight Manager that lets system administrators control and monitor Compaq UPSs remotely or locally. It lets them overview network power conditions , customize alert messages, configure shutdown timing and do UPS diagnostic checks.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. hibserv.exe. is used by Compaq Power Management, If you shut down hibserv.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop hibserv.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Compaq Power Management, from your system.

Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message.
