The halsv.exe file is the process called SGPHAL_SV Module that is used by the application Giga Pocket created by Sony Corporation. Giga Pocket is a software from Sony that lets you watch TV and record cable broadcasted and analogue terrestrial TV programs on your VAIO. It enables you to record such programs while you are away using its Time Recording Manager. Giga Pocket only works with the audio and TV tuner device pre-installed. VAIO devices enabled with Giga Pocket include composite video input, hardware MPEG-2 encoder, S-video input, and TV tuner that supports terrestrial TV and analogue cable TV. It supports broadcast standards such as PAL I, PAL B/G and SECAM L/L’. It supports audio standards such as AM mono, FM mono, NICAM multichannel audio including dual, stereo and mono, Zweiton/A2 multichannel audio including dual, stereo and mono. Recording formats supported include Full D1 video frame size, SP capsules, HQ capsules and audio properties [16-bit stereo, 48 kHz, 256 kbps MPEG-2].

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. halsv.exe. is used by Giga Pocket, If you shut down halsv.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop halsv.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Giga Pocket, from your system.

After uninstalling applications it is a good idea to scan you Windows registry for any left over traces of applications. Registry Reviver by ReviverSoft is a great tool for doing this.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as Giga Pocket, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
