Most reports by end users and anti-virus programs identify the gz.fmt file as malware. This is not a visible process. It can control or alter the behavior of other applications. The fmt is a Unix command that formats natural language text for reading. It is used traditionally to reformat E-mail messages after its composition and before delivery. Its syntax resembles several Unixes although not the same. Fmt tries to produce optimal, balanced output globally with lengths of every line reaching the target width as close as possible by breaking, filling and joining input lines instead of wrapping input lines exactly the way fold does. Malware or malicious software is a program created to access private systems without the knowledge of the owner, steal sensitive or private information and to interrupt with the normal operations of the target system. It can be in the form of active content, code, software or scripts.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. gz.fmt. is used by gz.fmt, If you shut down gz.fmt, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop gz.fmt, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is gz.fmt, from your system.
