Gtb.exe is a Google Internet Explorer Toolbar process which is installed with computers from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) like Dell. OEM is a company that manufactures computers in such a way that it packages the hardware, software, documentation and other components in just one product. Just like any other process, gtb.exe is an executable file. It continues to run in the background if the user allows it. The EXE file automatically installs itself in the computer system, once the OEM computer has been successfully setup and has started for the first time. So, gtb.exe is included in the Google software which comes with the computer hardware. After booting the computer, the user will notice that the cursor becomes an hourglass. This indicates that an application has been running in the system. This is the gtb.exe file. It is not a required file in the Startup, but it may be of use to the user later on.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. gtb.exe. is used by Google Toolbar, If you shut down gtb.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop gtb.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Google Toolbar, from your system.

After uninstalling applications it is a good idea to scan you Windows registry for any left over traces of applications. Registry Reviver by ReviverSoft is a great tool for doing this.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as Google Toolbar, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
