Google Gears is a Web browser extension that allows offline access to some online applications by downloading data to the hard drive. It works with a select group of sites that is specifically designed for compatibility and enables developers to create a rich platform for Web applications. Users are enabled to enjoy interaction between desktop and Web applications, store data locally in fully searchable database, and run JavaSript in the background to improve performance. This browser extension allows users to view Google Docs while offline, including documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Editing of documents offline is allowed, but new documents cannot be created. Google Gears can be used by Gmail to eliminate the need for a desktop email program, allows users to view their calendar while offline, and enables the Latitude Google iGadget to detect the user's location from a laptop or desktop computer.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. gears.dll. is used by Google Gears, If you shut down gears.dll, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop gears.dll, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Google Gears, from your system.
