The file ftraksvc.exe, known as Promise FastTrak Log Service, belongs to software FastTrack RAID Controller by Promise Technology. The RAID controller or disk array controller is a utility that manages the physical disk drives and presents them to the computer as logical units. This controller implements RAID (redundant array of independent disks), which is an umbrella term for computer data storage schemes that can divide and replicate data among multiple physical drives. The FastTrak RAID Controller from Promise is a multi-channel controller (4 and up), which presents an efficient solution that supports four SerialATA -150 devices and arrays of up to 1 terabyte capacity. The FastTrak RAID Controller has the ability to work in a 32-bit/66 MHZ PCL 2.2 slot that provides a maximum theoretical bandwidth of 266 MB/s. It allows using up to 256 MB of cache memory and its PCB carries chips of ferroelectric RAM that keeps transaction logs and integrated General-Purpose I/O ports for controlling the device.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. ftraksvc.exe. is used by FastTrak RAID Controller, If you shut down ftraksvc.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start.
