What is  fips.sys

FIPS Crypto Driver is the service name of the process fips.sys, which is also termed as Microsoft Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module, and a part of the program Microsoft Windows Operating System by Microsoft Corporation. This file, fips.sys, is a FIPS 140-1 Level 1 compliant and software based type of cryptographic module that is within the kernel mode level of Windows OS, which means it serves as an export driver of kernel mode DLL, with the functionality to encapsulate other cryptographic algorithms. It is a component that has a very vital role associated with the functions of the Windows operating system. Therefore, the fips.sys file is not only a part of it, but as a digitally signed process by Microsoft Windows 2000 Publisher (VeriSign Time Stamping Service), it must not be terminated. The fips.sys file must not be stopped or removed from the computer system, but remain stored and continue to run in the background to enable its function, which is to act as kernel mode export driver.
