What is  excel.exe

The excel.exe process is the driver of Microsoft Excel, the commercial spreadsheet program developed and distributed by the Microsoft Corporation for Windows-based and Mac computers. Excel multi-functions as calculator, graphing tool, pivot table, and a programming language known as the Visual Basic application. In 1993, Excel began to gradually replace Lotus 1-2-3, the industry standard in spreadsheets. Microsoft Excel has a grid of cells in numbered rows with letter-named columns designed to organize data and arithmetic operations. Excel has a group of programmed functions to answer statistical, financial and engineering needs. Excel can display data in line graphs, charts, and histograms using a 3-D graphical display. Microsoft Excel has interactive features such user interfaces with hidden spreadsheet, Decision Support System (DSS) which is an information system that displays organizational decision-making activities, stock analyzer, and poll databases, among many other functional features. Microsoft Excel also allows users to control the Excel startup by several command-line functions.

How can I stop excel.exe and should I?

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. excel.exe. is used by Microsoft Excel, If you shut down excel.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start.
