The file epmservice.exe, known as EPMService Module, belongs to software EPM Service. EPM (Electronic Post Mark) Service is a content integrity and time-and-date stamp application form the US Postal Service that can be used to verify the authenticity of a document or file sent electronically as of a specific point time. The service is provided by Authentidate, which is an authorized EPM Service provider. EPM is a web-based security service that enables users to detect whether electronic documents have been altered or modified, and provides users with the ability to verify authenticity of the document online. The electronic proof is maintained by the US Postal Service (USPS), which provides evidence to support non-repudiation of electronic transactions. The EPM Service enables users to conduct business electronically with a level of trust supported by USPS protection traditionally available for physical mail, and provides both senders and receivers of electronic documents USPS protection against content tampering.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. epmservice.exe. is used by EPM Service, If you shut down epmservice.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop epmservice.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is EPM Service, from your system.

After uninstalling applications it is a good idea to scan you Windows registry for any left over traces of applications. Registry Reviver by ReviverSoft is a great tool for doing this.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as EPM Service, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
