The file emscan.sys, also called USB 28xx WDM Upper Filter, belongs to software USB Still Image Capture Device by eMPIA Technology. The USB 28xx WDM Upper filter is the host software that connects other drivers, DLLs and applications to the USB Device programming interface. The USB Still Image Capture Device by Empia is capable of transferring audio and video signals from an electronic device like CD/DVD player and television to the computer. It inputs video signal into a device by Composite, S-Video, or RF inputs and audio with Stereo RF input. The output signal from the USB Capture Device is transmitted to the computer by a 2.0 USB cable that is plugged to the USB port at the speed of 400 MBPS. The USB Capture Device enables the user to covert analog videos to digital videos and then turns them into VCDs, CDs, or SVCDs. The device includes a direct to disc feature, which burns VCD, SVCD, or DVD without having to write on the hard disk. It saves video in digital format and configures the right format to PAL or NTSC, and supports the still image capture in BMP or JPEG.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. emscan.sys. is used by USB Still Image Capture Device, If you shut down emscan.sys, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop emscan.sys, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is USB Still Image Capture Device, from your system.
