The dns.exe process is the driver file for Domain Name System or DNS, the hierarchical naming distribution system for computers and devices, services, and resources from the Internet or from private networks. DNS associates data information with the domain name assigned to a particular participating entity. The Domain Name service resolves the queries for the name into an IP address in order to locate devices and computer services worldwide. DNS provides a keyword-based worldwide redirection service in the Internet technology. DNS works like the phone book of computer hostnames and translates them into IP addresses so that they can be readable by the Internet. For example, a domain name www.dns.com will be translated into the IP addresses of 178.255.85.16. Unlike the phone book, however, the DNS is quickly updated and distributed without affecting its end users that continue using the same hostname. In addition, DNS serves as identity protection when, for instance, a user declares worldwide his URL (Uniform Resource Locator) and e-mail address without having to give out information on his actual physical location. This mechanism makes the DNS fault tolerant as it waives the need to continually consult and update a single central register.
