The cstray.exe file is an executable component process of the CompuServe client software, which is a Windows program classified as an ISP (Internet Service Provider) management application that is distributed by CompuServe Information Service to its data subscription customers as an Internet connection monitoring and configuration tool with a set of features for checking the status of networking devices and the Internet connection of the Windows-based computer. The CompuServe client software can also be used for implementing changes or improvements to the network settings of the system. The cstray.exe process is specifically deployed into the system by the CompuServe client software as the executable program dispatcher file of the CompuServe Tray Application, which is a small built-in program responsible for integrating the control panel and context menu options of the CompuServe client program into the Windows System Tray via an icon with embedded user access functionalities. This means the cstray.exe process generates and places icon in the Windows System Tray whenever the CompuServe client program is actively running in the system, and this icon provides user access to the control panel options and context menu items that are also available in the UI (User Interface) of the CompuServe client software.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. cstray.exe. is used by CompuServe Client and CompuServe Tray Application, If you shut down cstray.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop cstray.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is CompuServe Client and CompuServe Tray Application, from your system.
