Many users reported that their system security tools flag the contenttool.dll file as a malicious application associated with a variant of the Adware.Searchtool program, which is a family of obtrusive adware components packaged as BHOs (Browser Helper Objects) and Web browser hijackers that are known to infect unprotected Windows-based systems with missing OS security certificates, outdated Web browsers and an unsecured Windows System Registry. These users claim that the contenttool.dll malware is capable of initiating contact with predesignated remote servers that are managed by its authors, in order to display pop-up advertisements related to the surfing habits and bookmarked pages of the user, in which these pop-ups are transmitted by these remote servers while the user is browsing the Internet. These users also claim that the contenttool.dll malware is activated by one of its executable component processes that is said to be capable of automatically initializing during system startup because of certain keys and entries that this executable process is said to be capable of creating and inserting into the unsecured Windows System Registry upon its successful placement and activation in the unprotected Windows-based computer. These users also state that these registry keys and entries allegedly instruct the system to allow the contenttool.dll malware and its executable component processes to operate as hidden background processes during system runtime. Other users reported that their anti-malware applications classify the contenttool.dll file as a malicious application associated with the ADW_SEARCHTOOL.I program, which is another family of obtrusive adware items with spyware functionalities.
