The cmaudio.sys process file is known as C-Media Audio WDM Driver, that is bundled with the C-Media PCI Audio Driver or C-Media Audio Driver software developed by C-Media. The C-Media CMI8738 WDM Driver is compatible with Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows ME. A CMI8738-based audio card is required in order for it to work on a computer. Wavetable Music Synthesis, Karaoke, Xear3D, Equalizer, Multi-Channel 3D positional gaming audio, reverbs and EAX 2.0 are supported by the C-Media CMI8738. For most Linux OS versions, a Linux driver is also available. The Legacy audio – FM emulator, SBPRO, and MIDI MPU-401 port/game port – is supported by the CMI8738, while the 8738-LX or 8738-MX supports 6-channel DACs for 5.1 home theater environments, 3D games and movies, and also complies with the audio performance requirements of the PC99. The 8738-MX supplies S/PDIF digital audio interface I/O for 44.1 KHz and 48 KHz LPCM audio or Dolby Digital (AC-3), DTS Digital Surround 5.1 pass-through as well. The 8738-SX supports 4-channel 16-bit DACs to supply surround audio also for 3D games and movies. The C-Media CMI8738 WDM Driver for Windows XP also features 2-bit PCI 2.1 compatible bus master, 32ohm earphone buffer (built-in), 2CH 16bit ADC (built-in), Microphone pre-amplifier (+20dB) (built-in), ZV port (built-in), analog mixer for Line-in, Mic-in, Aux, CD inputs (supported), full-duplex 44.1K/48KHz sample rate playback and recording at 16bit (supported), External E2PROM interface for custom Sub-VID/PID, Industrial 128-pin QFP package, and Digital power +3.3V, analog power +5V.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. cmaudio.sys. is used by C-Media Audio CMI8738 WDM Driver, If you shut down cmaudio.sys, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop cmaudio.sys, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is C-Media Audio CMI8738 WDM Driver, from your system.
