Bluetooth Protocol Stack, also referred to as Bluetooth Bus Enumerator, or Bluetooth Protocol Driver for Windows version 2000, is the service name of btkrnl.sys, which is a driver file, and a component of the program Bluetooth Software, in versions 3.0.1 Build 3, and 1.4.2 Build 10, also associated with HP Integrated Module, or WIDCOMM Bluetooth Software, or Bluetooth Bus Enumerator, which is developed by Broadcom, or WIDCOMM. In other words, this file is basically a BlueToth network driver, which is only used and enabled if there is BlueTooth within the computer, laptop, or notebook. Once the software is downloaded, this driver process is also installed, registered into the Windows registry, and stored on a folder location, but then automatically run in the background. It is advisable to keep this process running in the system, and must not be terminated, unless it causes problems or errors that may partially or fully affect the program that houses it.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. btkrnl.sys. is used by Bluetooth Software, If you shut down btkrnl.sys, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop btkrnl.sys, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Bluetooth Software, from your system.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as Bluetooth Software, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message.
