The avastantivirus.exe file is a process called avast!Antivirus.exe that belongs to the application avast!Antivirus that is authored by an unknown developer. The location of avastantivirus.exe is in the folder C:\Windows\System32. Known sizes for the file include 32,768 bytes and 36,684 bytes with 60% occurrence on Windows XP or Windows 7 operating system. It is not a visible program. The process file is located on Windows folder, but it is not a core file for Windows. The avast!Antivirus.exe process can control other applications. The process is a type of Trojan Downloader that has the malware name TrojanDownloader.Win32.Agent.cdir. Reviews have classified this file as unsafe. It is spammed by E-mail. It arrives with the attachment ecard.zip that contains ecard.exe. When the infected attachment executes, the avast!Antivirus.exe is copied to the Windows system folder and alters the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet\Services\avast!Antivirus to automatically load on the next startup. It can also download various malicious files into the system.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. avastantivirus.exe. is used by avast!Antivirus.exe, If you shut down avastantivirus.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start.
