Developed by Hewlett-Packard Corporation, accelerometerst.exe is the process file for System Tray Applet for Mobile Data Protection System or the 3D DriveGuard System. It comes with digital accelerometer to protect the disk drive by halting I/O requests and parking the drive. Its hardware hard-drive protection avoids and reduces mechanical damage to the hard disk drive by preparing it prior to impact. Such method of approach is used in HP laptop computers which are frequently ported from place to place, making it prone to impacts compared to desktop computers. The Mobile Data Protection System consists of accelerometers which alert the system if excess vibration is detected. Its software sends commands to the hard disk for the unloading of its heads in order to prevent contact with the platter, therefore preventing head crash, provided the hard drive runs at the moment of the impact. The modern hard drives unload their heads the power dies down.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. accelerometerst.exe. is used by HP Mobile Data Protection System, If you shut down accelerometerst.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start.
