Wlanext.exe is the executable file for the Windows Wireless LAN Extensibility Framework, a task on Windows Vista operating system that provides an interface for wireless connectivity and security of wireless network adaptors such as USB, PCI, and PCMCIA cards of all modern laptop computers. WLAN, or wireless local area network, links two or more computers or devices using a wireless distribution method and provides a connection via an access point off to the wider Internet, giving users the mobility around the local coverage area while connected to the network. Wlanext.exe’s architecture consists of Stations (components that are connected into a wireless medium within a network), Basic Service Set (a set of stations that communicate and interact with each other), the Extended Service Set (a set of connected BSSs), and the Distribution System (connected access points within the extended service set) that can be used for increasing network coverage via cell to cell roaming, which can be wireless or wired.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. wlanext.exe. is used by Wireless LAN, If you shut down wlanext.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop wlanext.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Wireless LAN, from your system.

After uninstalling applications it is a good idea to scan you Windows registry for any left over traces of applications. Registry Reviver by ReviverSoft is a great tool for doing this.

Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
