Developed by Cisco Systems Incorporated, vpnagent.exe is the process file for VPN Agent (Virtual Private Network Agent), the program that maintains secure local area network or LAN connectivity between computers in a corporate or business network. The VPN Agent establishes outgoing secure service locator or SSL connections to the LAN that are individually authenticated by digital certificates, eliminating any access dependency on domain name servers and IP addresses, as it routes the network traffic through the secure location tunnels it maintains. The routing structure of the VPN Agent begins upon system startup, when it registers with the LAN and notifies the network as it automatically provides reachable virtual private network or VPN routes to the entire authenticated LAN and its subnets, where the entire network can confidentially communicate securely via a public accessible network like the Internet. This network connection architecture is accomplished in one single switch within an enterprise.
