The file snmpdm.exe, known as Emanate SNMP, belongs to software Emanate SNMP by Guidance Software. Emanate SNMP is a developer's toolkit for runtime extensible modular SNMP that supports SNMP v1, SNMP v2c, and SNMP v.3. SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is a popular protocol for network management that is used for collecting information from, and configuring network devices such as printers, switches, servers, routers and hubs on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. The Emanate Agent development tools are designed to remove guesswork from adding management support to the agent. It is a modular system made up of a Master Agent, which supports multiple sub-agents. The Master Agent is the core engine that handles all of the communication with SNMP management applications, packet processing, authentication and privacy processing, ASN.1/BER encoding and decoding, and sub-agent registration and communications. Emanate includes a sub-agent development kit (SDK) that automates the agent development process.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. snmpdm.exe. is used by Emanate SNMP, If you shut down snmpdm.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop snmpdm.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Emanate SNMP, from your system.

After uninstalling applications it is a good idea to scan you Windows registry for any left over traces of applications. Registry Reviver by ReviverSoft is a great tool for doing this.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as Emanate SNMP, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
