Installing the igfxtray.exe file will give you an application that is known as Intel Graphics Tray. This is basically the System Tray for the features of your onboard graphics card, powered by Intel’s 81x chipsets for graphics hardware. On the System Tray, you will be able to configure the settings of your computer’s display functions. The application likewise enables you to configure your keyboard shortcut keys. The file does not provide an essential process that will enable your graphics cards to work properly. It is simply an add-on feature to make configuration of your display easier to do, as you can find everything that you need for configuration right on the System Tray. A few users have reported that having the file enabled causes Windows Explorer to hang. This is why disabling the file is recommended, especially if the process that the file installed is not going to be regularly used. You can configure your graphics card instead through the Control Panel.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. igfxtray.exe. is used by Intel Graphics Tray, If you shut down igfxtray.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop igfxtray.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Intel Graphics Tray, from your system.
