The file iastor.sys is the driver for SATA disks, generally for RAID-configured systems. The process name is Intel AHCI Controller, and this is responsible for your SATA disks and RAID system working properly together. Uninstalling the file will not only render these disks unusable, but without the file installed, you may experience serious system failure. As a matter of fact, without these installed, you will not be able to install your Windows operating system, and pretty much anything else. It is therefore highly essential that the file be kept enabled, because this is a critical system file. An erroneous or corrupt iastor.sys file may cause the Blue Screen of Death, which was experienced by several users with a corrupt iastor.sys file. The file’s general location is C:\Windows\System 32\Drivers\iastor.sys. File sizes are between 872,064 and 874,240 bytes. The file is required to run upon system startup. The file is licensed and verified by Intel.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. iastor.sys. is used by Intel AHCI Controller, If you shut down iastor.sys, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop iastor.sys, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Intel AHCI Controller, from your system.
