The gth.dll file is the process called GoogleToolbarNotifier that is used by the application Google Toolbar Notifier created by Google. A DLL [dynamic link library] file has a mechanism for shared codes and data that can be applied to different applications at the same time. This mechanism allows a developer to upgrade functions of a program without the need to recompile or re-link. It is easy to arrange and install. It can inject itself into other running applications to control or change their behavior. The gth.dll file is not a visible process. This process file has a digital signature certified by VeriSign Time Stamping Services. The Google Toolbar Notifier is part of Google Toolbar, a browser application that lets you search the Web. This part of the toolbar automatically launches at computer startup, and makes sure that Google is the default search engine.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. gth.dll. is used by GoogleToolbarNotifier, If you shut down gth.dll, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop gth.dll, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is GoogleToolbarNotifier, from your system.
