What is  gmer.sys

The file gmer.sys, known as GMER Driver http://www.gmer.com, belongs to software Gmer by Gmer. Gmer is software for the detection and removal of rootkits. A Rootkit is malicious software that is very hard to detect and remove from the system. It is a stealthy type of software that is designed to hide the existence of certain processes or programs from normal methods of detection and enable continued privileged access to the computer. The rootkit functions at a deeper level of the operating system than most security system is capable of scanning. Gmer is designed to detect deeply hidden rootkits by performing scans of hidden processes, hidden threads, hidden registry keys, hidden modules and hidden disk sectors (MBR), hidden files and hidden alternate data streams. It also scans inline hooks, drivers hooking IDT, drivers hooking SSDT, and drivers hooking IRP calls. Gmer analyzes the whole computer system and creates a log of any hidden items that might indicate evidence of a rootkit.
