The freewheel.exe file is the process called FreeWheel used by the application FreeWheel developed by Midnight Oil. It is not a core file for Windows that means the operating system can run without needing this process. It is not a system process that originates from the software installed in the system. This program uses an icon on the taskbar. It records inputs. FreeWheel is an application that is used to enhance the use of the IntelliPoint mouse. This program uses an icon on the system tray. This program allows you to make changes to the focus mode that is the way the operating system handles the window to be scrolled. It also allows you to adjust the scroll line. You can switch between application and document window by holding the Alt key or Ctrl+Shift key down while moving your mouse wheel. It is a quick way to change active windows.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. freewheel.exe. is used by FreeWheel, If you shut down freewheel.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop freewheel.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is FreeWheel, from your system.

After uninstalling applications it is a good idea to scan you Windows registry for any left over traces of applications. Registry Reviver by ReviverSoft is a great tool for doing this.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as FreeWheel, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
