The file el2k_xp.sys, known as 3Com 3C2000 NDIS (version 5.1 miniport driver), belongs to software 3Com 3C2000x EtherLink XL Adapter by 3Com. The miniport driver directly manages the network adapter that is installed in the system, and provides an interface to allow protocol drivers to configure the adapter and to send and receive packets over the network. The 3C2000xEtherLink XL Adapter is a peripheral component interconnect (PCI) management adapter that feature enhanced manageability including remote system alerts. It allows network administrators to monitor PCs for case intrusion, voltage and temperature levels, and boot failures. The adapter has an onboard-managed PC Boot Agent for improved remote wakeup capabilities that enable network administrators to remotely install software, configure PCs, and backup hard drives. It includes PC management features that permit power-up of PCs from a central point of management, and the managed Boot Agent that is added in the adapter provides flexibility to perform a pre-OS boot.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. el2k_xp.sys. is used by 3Com 3C2000x EthyerLink XL Adapter, If you shut down el2k_xp.sys, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop el2k_xp.sys, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is 3Com 3C2000x EthyerLink XL Adapter, from your system.
