Known by the service name Dumpcap, the file dumpcap.exe is an executable type, and is a part of the program Wireshark Dumpcap, also referred to as Dumpcap, which is developed by The Wireshark Developer Community. This file has a digital signature from Wireshark Foundation - Symantec Time Stamping Services Signer - G3, which implies that it is a legitimate process, or, in other words, needs to remain stored and running in the background. Terminating or stopping this file is enough to disable its function, but if it is causing problems that affect not only the program, but also the performance, stability or speed of the computer system. Like other Windows file processes, dumpcap.exe runs as a background service on most versions of Microsoft Windows Operating Systems, which include Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows ME, Windows 98, and Windows 95.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. dumpcap.exe. is used by Wireshark Dumpcap or Dumpcap, If you shut down dumpcap.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop dumpcap.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Wireshark Dumpcap or Dumpcap, from your system.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as Wireshark Dumpcap or Dumpcap, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
