The process dlcdcoms.exe, known as Printer Communication System, belongs to software dlcd_device, which is a Dell printer driver. Printer drivers like dlcd_device interface with the operating system installed in the computer to execute a print command. The driver software is needed because most applications are not designed to interface directly with a printer. There are various languages or protocols by which a printer driver communicates with a printer to produce the desired output on paper. These protocols include Postscript (PS), Printer Command Language (PCL), and Printer Job Language (PJL). PS is highly complex language originally developed by Adobe in 1985, which is the de facto standard for reproducing color accurate documents. PCL , created by HP in the early 1980's, has been continuously developed, and is the protocol used in most printers. However, PCL is not designed for high color accuracy because it lacks Pantone support. PJL from HP provides various job-level settings including language and resolution, and is hierarchically above PS and PCL.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. dlcdcoms.exe. is used by dlcd_device, If you shut down dlcdcoms.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop dlcdcoms.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is dlcd_device, from your system.
