The cscript.exe process is also known as the Microsoft Console Based Script Host and is created by the Microsoft Corporation. It belongs to the Windows Script Host. Scripts can be run with this program by typing the name of a script file within the command prompt. Windows Script Host is similar to Microsoft Internet Explorer in that it serves as a controller of the Windows Script compliant scripting engines. Fortunately, the Windows Script has low memory requirements. Ideally, Windows Script can be used both for interactive and non-interactive scripting needs, such as administrative scripting and logon scripting. This program is a Windows Script Host command-line version and supplies command-line options for setting script properties. Upon starting a script on the user’s desktop the script host reads and then passes the script file contents to a registered script engine and uses file extensions. The Windows Script Host maintains script mapping extensions to programmatic identifiers and utilizes Windows XP association model to start the compatible engine for the given script.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. cscript.exe. is used by Windows Script, If you shut down cscript.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop cscript.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Windows Script, from your system.

After uninstalling applications it is a good idea to scan you Windows registry for any left over traces of applications. Registry Reviver by ReviverSoft is a great tool for doing this.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as Windows Script, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
