The Panda Antivirus software implements the comfiltr.sys file as one of the SYS driver utilities that this system security software integrates into the Windows-based system, in order to provide users with a complete solution for monitoring, detecting and blocking possible viruses, backdoor rootkits, spyware applications, Trojans, worms and other malicious programs that may potentially cause hacker attacks, system stability issues, data security risks, user privacy threats, data loss or corruption. The comfiltr.sys file is specifically deployed into the system as the COMFilter driver that is used by the Panda Antivirus software whenever this program needs to implement the embedded functionalities of the Panda Anti-Dialer application, which is a small program built into the Panda Antivirus software that is responsible for monitoring modem devices connected to the Windows-based computer, and for detecting and blocking suspicious outgoing modem phone calls possibly performed by malicious dialer applications. These dialer programs are known to hijack the call-out functionalities of the modems that are connected to the infected Windows-based system, in order to make phone calls to paid phone subscription services that are managed by the authors of these malicious dialer applications. The comfiltr.sys file assists the Panda Anti-Dialer application in communicating, via the system, with the modem that is connected to the Windows-based computer.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. comfiltr.sys. is used by Panda Antivirus and Panda Anti-Dialer Application, If you shut down comfiltr.sys, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop comfiltr.sys, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Panda Antivirus and Panda Anti-Dialer Application, from your system.
