Acs.exe is the executable file for Atheros Configuration Service, a program which facilitates configuration and operation of wireless devices and drivers of wireless cards using the Atheros chipset which includes D-Link, Linksys, and Netgear cards. The Atheros Configuration Service gives access to a single sign on and communication mechanism to the supplicant for the purpose of security negotiation. ACS or Atheros Configuration Service is a program that also handles the authentication of the wireless configuration, an alternative to the built-in WRZ or Windows Wireless Zero Configuration service contained in wireless devices. Although the acs.exe process is not among the essential components of the operating system, disabling or terminating the application is not recommended as it will cause malfunction of the wireless functionality of the machine, together with the programs related to it. Disabling the process is only possible if not using the wi-fi service. When enabled, ACS handles all wireless activities and processes, not the Windows.
