The alcan5wn.sys file is also known as WAN Driver which is a property of the software SpeedTouch USB ADSL PPP Networking Driver (NDISWAN) or simply called SpeedTouch USB designed and manufactured by THOMSON. The SpeedTouch USB has become the brand name for several products manufactured by Alcatel and Technicolor SA (formely known as THOMSON SA). The SpeedTouch related software has been associated to many network devices like ADSL and ADSL2+ modems, VoIP handsets, and wireless access equipment to name a few. In other words, this software is mainly used to connect computers to the internet or the home or office network. The SpeedTouch USB software device does not require a router as it is regarded as a modem itself that can connect to available networks. This software works well with Mac OS X and Windows operating systems that are not powered by later processors like Intel. This is not compatible with Linux operating systems.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. alcan5wn.sys. is used by SpeedTouch USB, If you shut down alcan5wn.sys, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop alcan5wn.sys, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is SpeedTouch USB, from your system.
