Fixing Bluetooth in Windows 8

We recently published an article about turning on Bluetooth in Windows 8. This article spread like wildfire across the Internet for one simple reason: for many users, upgrading to Windows 8 made Bluetooth stop working! The comments section of our previous article is filled with users with dozens of models of laptops, notebooks and netbooks who can’t get Bluetooth working under Windows 8.

Here, then, is our definitive guide for getting Bluetooth working again in Windows 8.

Bluetooth Doesn't Work
Is Bluetooth not working in Windows 8? We can help.

Download the Latest Drivers

The first and best approach is to go to your laptop manufacturer’s website and grab the latest Bluetooth drivers from there. Many of them have Windows 8 specific Bluetooth drivers that are designed to get Bluetooth working again. Often, the very latest Windows 7 drivers will work too. Be sure and grab the specific driver for your type of Windows (32-bit or 64-bit). Once you install the latest drivers and reboot, you should see Bluetooth appear in your wireless settings.

You can also determine your Bluetooth hardware manufacturer and try downloading drivers directly from that company’s site. This works well if you have a Broadcom adapter. To determine your system’s Bluetooth manufacturer, try Googling your PC’s model number (written on the front or underneath your laptop), or go to your Control Panel in Windows, open Device Manager and look under Bluetooth.

Uninstall Conflicting Bluetooth Software

Sometimes your laptop will ship with a wireless manager that will interfere with Windows’s own wireless management. Uninstall the application that comes with your PC and manage your wireless directly in Windows 8.

Turn On your Hardware Wireless Switch

Though wireless switches have fallen out of favor on recent laptops, machines that are a few years old still have them. I have a Sony laptop with a single switch for both wireless and Bluetooth, and when I close the lid, it tends to cause the wireless switch to turn off. When this switch is off, Bluetooth will not even appear in Windows, so make sure it’s in the On position before trying to activate Bluetooth in software.

Try Driver Reviver

Driver Reviver is excellent at tracking down the latest wireless drivers for your laptop. If you’re having trouble locating the specific Bluetooth driver update you need for Windows 8, Driver Reviver will do the trick.

If you have an ASUS K55A, grab the most recent drivers from this page on ASUS’s site.

The ASUS Republic of Gamers G74SX has a forum thread dedicated to it with multiple solutions. Check it out.

Those with an ASUS Vivobook S200E or X202 can get the latest drivers on ASUS’s site as well.

And those with a Vivobook S400CA can also get drivers from ASUS’s site.

If you have a Dell Inspiron N5010, you need to get the most recent Bluetooth driver for your machine on Dell’s site. It may say Windows 7, but proceed anyway. Download it to your desktop or Downloads folder, then extract the file. You’ll get an error message about the program not being compatible with Windows 8. Close this message.

You’ll then need to navigate to the driver’s location (usually c:\dell\drivers\drivername\Win64 or Win32).
Then, you’ll need to install the Setup file in Compatibility Mode to make Windows run it as if it were in Windows 7:

  1. Right-click on the Setup file
  2. Click Properties
  3. Click the Compatibility tab
  4. Select Run This Program in Compatibility Mode For
  5. Choose Windows 7 from the menu
  6. Select Run This Program as an Administrator
  7. Click OK

Bluetooth Doesn't Work
Running driver setup in Compatibility Mode can help in Windows 8.
Run the setup file, and the driver should work fine in Windows 8 after that.

The Dell Inspiron 15R and some other Dell models can just get the Bluetooth driver from this location on Dell’s site and it should work fine. Try the Compatibility Mode method above if not.

The Dell Inspiron 1440 can get the latest Bluetooth driver at Dell’s site also.

If you have a Dell Studio 1555, get this driver from Dell’s site instead.

HP / Compaq

This covers the HP Pavilion G6 2313AX and other models. Here’s a link to the Bluetooth driver you will need on HP’s website.

For a slightly different model, the G6 2016TX, get the latest drivers from HP’s site here.

Bluetooth in the HP 620 worked fine in Windows 7, but not in Windows 8. Try this driver first on HP’s site. If it doesn’t work, try installing it using the Compatibility Mode method.

If you have a Compaq CQ58 or other Compaq models, try this driver on HP’s site.

Instead of going to Lenovo’s site, for the Lenovo B320 and other Lenovo models, go directly to Broadcom’s site (the driver manufacturer) and get the driver from there.

For the Lenovo G450, though, try this driver on Lenovo’s site.

And if you have a Lenovo G580, you’re going to want to go here on Lenovo’s site instead.

Medion laptops, such as the Medion Akoya P6635, use Intel Centrino integrated Wireless-N with Bluetooth 4.0. Get the most recent driver from Intel’s site, as Medion offers no support at all from their site.

The Samsung Chronos 7 and other Samsung models can find the latest Bluetooth drivers from this location on Samsung’s website.

Sony has been slow to release Windows 8 drivers for some of their older laptops, and may not be doing so at all. If you have a Sony SVE15113en, try this latest Windows 7 driver from Sony’s site. You may need to install the driver in Compatibility Mode. See the instructions above under Dell for doing so.

Older Sony laptops (like the VPC-CW290X) often use Broadcom Bluetooth adapters. Try the software on Broadcom’s website, as it’s specifically designed for Windows 8.

Newer Sony laptops (such as the Vaio E Series 14P, model number SVE14A390X) use Qualcomm Atheros Bluetooth adapters. Try this driver on Sony’s site.

The Toshiba Satellite Core i5 P855-S5312 and other Toshiba models can use this recent Bluetooth driver from Toshiba’s site to get it working.

If you have a Toshiba Satellite C640-PSC2UG instead, try this driver from Toshiba’s site.

Hi Steve. I have a vaio VPCEB15FB and my bluetooth switch doesn´t appear in settings two. I´m trying to install drivers from sony or from broadcom, but when i try it, it says that my device is not connected. The physical switch from my computer, that is the same for wifi and blue tooth, is on.

  • ReviverSoft

    Hi Andre,

You may need to update your Bluetooth firmware. Check out this link for more details on that.

  • Andre Savioli

I tried to install this driver and the one from broadcom, but it was not possible, because they not even start installation complaining that bluetooth was disabled. In fact, BT device was not appearing in device manager from Windows. I´ve restarted my note book too many times, i checked BIOS and didn´t find nothing. I tried Driver Reviver but it didn´t find nothing related to bluetooth.

I don´t know why, but after one restart in notebook, bluetooth device appeared in device manager like magic…. After that, i could make bluetooth work installing the following software from broadcom:

Unfortunately i can´t explain nether why bluetooth device was not appearing in device manager, nor why it appeared back.

    Thaks for the help

    Rich said:

“”uninstall your Pc’s Wireless manager.” I am not sure what that is. Are you asking me to uninstall Dells Wireless Card??? That would make it so I don’t have wifii access at all. For my computer (Inspiron 1545) there is no substitute for that.

Usually, a PC will come with a wireless manager third-party application. This is unnecessary in Windows 8, as it handles Wi-Fi and Bluetooth natively. Often, a third-party app will interfere with the native software, rendering both useless.

    Rich said:

The widnows 8 cd does nothing but bounce off what I already have, so if a mistake is made during downloading or if you choose the wrong option you could very easily find yourself with a useless paperweight that is asking for “boot managers.” Yes this happened to me.

It’s possible for Windows 8 owners to burn their download to a disc, in order to act as a full Windows recovery disc. Owning a previous version is not necessary — though it takes a few extra steps on the Windows 8 user’s part if they bought it digitally rather than buying the CD.

    Rich said:

Now they have ADDED not replaced, but added the charms wireless control and for my machine, it seems to “fight” with the control panel. The control panel (left over from 7, cuz this is cloud software) wants to do what is normally does, but is being interfered with the useless, ram sucking charms menu.

Agreed that Bluetooth functionality in Windows 8 is convoluted and often doesn’t work after an upgrade … we’ve done a whole series of Bluetooth articles to try and explain why it works differently and how to get Bluetooth running in Windows 8.

    Rich said:
Also giving advice to go to a third party driver software program at $40 a pop that gives you many drivers that are not needed and can’t actually damage your machine is advice that I find to be unethical. But i’m sure “Driver Restore” is paying what they need to pay to get us to download.

It’s actually first-party software. ReviverSoft, who runs this blog, also manages Driver Reviver, so you can see why it would make sense for us to mention our product when appropriate. It does actually work well with Bluetooth drivers under Windows 8.

    Rich said:
Stick with windows 7 for as long as you can and if you are so daring do a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 the Bluetooth on there is fabulous!!

Luckily, although Microsoft is ending Windows XP support in April 2014, Windows 7 support won’t be ending for a long, long time.

    Thanks for writing in!

  • ReviverSoft

    Hi Rich,
It’s true that Windows 8 compatibility is left off a lot of the time, because manufacturers cannot guarantee that it will work fully. This is changing as manufacturers finally catch up to Windows 8.

    Hi Neeku,
What model PC do you have? I can help you once I know this information. Thanks!

  • Sorry for the delay here. Have you tried updating the drivers as stated in the article above?

  • Hi Rob,

You might need to wait for Windows 8.1 and see whether that works better. It is going to be released in just over a week.

  • Hola Jenny,

Tany fue capaz de solucionar el problema. ¿Has podido solucionar el problema también?

Lo siento por mi mal español

  • temi

    Thanks for this

  • I did a bit of research on this computer. It looks like there is a hardware switch on the front of the laptop for turning on and off wireless. I’m guessing this after looking at pictures of the laptop. Is this correct?

If you I would try toggling this switch when you are on the manage wireless setting screen to see if the options for bluetooth change.

  • Patrick Linnane

hi. i was shocked that my samsung n130 netbook also has this problem too. how can i fix it. i would be so gratful for your help. thank you.

  • Have you tried the steps laid out in the article? You should update your drivers and hopefully that will fix it.

  • rGrabosch

This is frustrating. Every time Windows 8 / 8.1 updates itself, the same bluetooth problem re-occurs and I need to look all over again for a driver. What a pain, Microsoft!

  • Davide De Vellis

Hi John, Which Windows operating system are you using? Have you tried any of the recommendations posted in the feed already? It looks like some have been met with success.

  • Davide De Vellis

    Hi John,

You should be careful when considering uninstalling drivers. If you’re set on uninstalling, navigate to your control panel, and choose Device Manager. Find the Device that you’re interested in and right click on it. Hit properties. It will bring up a properties screen for the device with a number of tabs, one of which will be Driver. Click on this tab, then look for the option to “Uninstall”. Be prepared that the device is unlikely to function after you’ve done this and you’ll want to look to re-install the correct driver at your earliest convenience. Let us know how you go.

  • Davide De Vellis

    Hi Yolandi,

A couple of questions for you, they might seem obvious, but sometimes the answer is right in front of you and you miss it:

    – Have you confirmed the location where you transferred the files? Perhaps you have thought that it was in 1 location but it is actually somewhere else. If you know the file name of one of the files you transferred perhaps you can try and do a search for that file.

    – Did you confirm that the files were in fact transferred before rebooting? Maybe the files didn’t actually transfer across? While sometimes it may appear so, files don’t delete themselves.

    – Are you able to redo the transfer and confirm both of the points above? Does the problem still occur?

  • Davide De Vellis

    Hi Christian,

Have you tried to run Driver Reviver to see if it will identify and update the driver for you?

  • Yolandi

I have done all of that and they are gone

  • Davide De Vellis

    Hi Yolandi,

Have you been through the transfer process again? It sounds like this will be the only solution if you have confirmed trying to search for a specific file name and it has not returned a result.

  • Davide De Vellis

Hi – Since you have been through the process of ensuring that the latest drivers are installed for your device and this has not resolved the issue, Have you been through the process of seeing if there is also a bios update for your system? Here’s how you check for Bios updates:
Let me know how you go.

  • Gregory Oxley

Howdy Folks, Nice to meet you guys. I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 that came with windows 8, and I noticed that the bluetooth program seem not to be working correctly. it onces in a while does not come on and I tried to restart the computer but had to do it several times before it could come on. why is this happening?

  • Cristian Méndez

Hello! My laptop model is Asus N750JV. Pls help! Thanks.

  • Jerry Phelps

Everywhere I turn I’m being pointed to Bluetooth Assistant or Wireless Devices to solve the bluetooth non-op problem I have with my Toshiba L875D-S7332 Laptop. I dont get any help from searching for help to activate bluetooth even after downloading every driver I can find. There is no Bluetooth driver listed when I go to the Driver Downloads on Toshiba’s sight. I’m running Windows 8.1. I guess my PC is unique in that I don’t have any support for bluetooth and can’t find any drivers that will give me any support.. I have a bluetooth speaker that sits less than 36″ from my laptop and I have purchased a USB Radio dongle and I still can’t pair up my PC with it. My cellphone pairs up just fine with this speaker but “no cigar” with my laptop.

  • Yasmin

i have the same problem as him

  • Yasmin

    did u find a solution ?

  • Yasmin

my satellite laptop toshiba doesn`t want to enable Bluetooth !!

  • Yasmin

that`s my problem it does`t want to be enabled !!

  • Do you have a Bluetooth hardware switch anywhere on your computer? Sometimes there is a network on/off switch on some laptops and that would be a reason this is greyed out. The other thing to try is making sure you have the latest bluetooth driver for your computer.

  • Ari

Hi I have an Asus A55A. I tried installing the most recent device driver update twice and all I’ve managed to accomplish is to get the greyed out bluetooth on/off switch. However, I can’t get the darn thing working. Is there something I’m missing? Thanks

  • Orlando

msi ge60 2oe isnt on the list and i cant figure it out

  • Lora

I ran into the same problem. You need to purchase a Bluetooth adapter you can find it at best buy for about $20. It’s just a small USB port adapter that plugs into you USB port, download the software that comes with it and it will search for the current driver. Then go into your Wireless Devices to add it and you should be fine

  • Jerry Phelps

I wrote a long reply but couldn’t submit it as Disqus blocked me. Oh well so much for no help as I’ve done all you suggested plus much more without results. I’m told the MS Windows 8.1 is the problem.

And that is the REAL problem.
The manufacturers have been to fast to open up for Win 8 updates before having sorted all the sickenss / compability issues.
To avoid any issues like these before updating to Windows 8 on your windows 7 machine follow these steeps it is VITAL and critical important.
IUf you are one of those who skipped this part, I advice any to recovery to win 7 factory defaults follow the steeps before u update to win 8. And any other who want to update please follow and see the result.

    1) Run all Windows updates available – check if any updates has failed, run them again.

    2) Run all manufacture software updates, they often include Firmware updates to. it is a must do before updating to windows 8.

Else lovely and very professionel gudiance here on reviversoft. Thumbs up keep up the good work.

I have users with the Samsung Smart PC’s (Win 8) experiencing this issue when I paired the Samsung Bluetooth Mouse. It works for a while, then they get an error on the Bluetooth Radio. I’ve just tried Bluetooth Radio Properties – turning off the power save option, the drivers are up to date. I’ve disabled/ enabled Bluetooth, I’ve uninstalled and re-installed it a few times but it just keeps happenning.

For people experiencing issues like No Bluetooth in the Wireless setting or Greyed-Out option of bluetooth, try the following steps:
    1) Make sure (if there is any) that the hardware switch of Wifi/Bluetooth is turned on
    2) Install the respective bluetooth drivers.
    3) Boot into Safe Mode (Safest option if any of the driver malfunctions in windows 8/8.1):
    a) For booting into safe mode, just search “Advanced startup options” in search under Start menu
    b) Navigate to bottom of the right-side screen, Click “Restart Now” under “Advanced Startup”
    c) After that 3-4 options will come up (depending on your type of windows), Select “Troubleshoot PC”
    d) Select “Advanced Options”, then “Startup Options”
    e) Select “Restart”
    f) Now to boot into safe mode, Select F4 function key.
Now you have successfully booted into safe mode.
    4) Now in the search bar under Start menu, type “Bluetooth”
    5) Under settings, Select “Turn on Wireless Communications on or off”
    6) Now you should be able to see Bluetooth (for people who were not able to see), and turn it on (for people who were seeing it greyed-out)
    7) Now “SHUT DOWN” (DON’T RESTART) the PC.
    8) Turn on and Enjoy sharing with Bluetooth.

Hope this helps resolve the problems of many people.

Hi! I got a problem with my lenovo G480 I can’t use bluetooth!

  • Here is a different scenario. This is a Dell XPS8500 system with 24gigs of ram. What I would like to know is if it is possible to change the bluetooth driver loading priority in windows 8.1? I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse (Microsoft designed for win 8). What happens it it will load up the login screen and I have to wait up to another minute to minute and a half before I can use the keyboard/mouse to do anything. Not conducive to logging in if the keyboard isn’t active ;-).

I have tried everything to find the Bluetooth icon on my HP2000. There is no Wireless listing in PC settings, nothing in the Control Panel, nothing in Notifications except times to hide. I have downloaded the Broadcam Bluetooth driver from HP, and have rebooted my computer twice. I don’t know where else to look, or what else to do.

The fact that one has to go to such ridiculous lengths to make something work that really should have worked out of the box to begin with just proves once more what a fucking bunch of morons Microsoft are.
It seems like with every new Windows version they’re going out of their way to break at least 3 things that worked fine in the previous version. :-(

The link for the HP 620 driver is dead. Also I have tried the latest 620 Bluetooth drivers for Win 7 x64, using compatibility mode but to no avail. Note the Bluetooth adapter shows up in Windows 8.1 when the hardware combined wifi/bt toggle is on (though it no longer toggles the wifi, just bluetooth, wifi always on now but that’s no bother). I just cannot discover any devices.

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 11-3147 2-in-1. I just got a little Jam Classic portable Bluetooth speaker, and when I first tried to connect it, I had issues. Eventually I uninstalled the device and reinstalled, and it worked fine.

Until I shut it off, and went to plug in my headphones.

When I did that, I wasn’t getting any sound, the volume notification still says “Speakers (Bluetooth)”, and when I went to the device list in the control panel, all my devices have a warning triangle and say “driver error”. What’s going on, and how do I fix it? Thanks!

  • X_Robert

My problem was bluetooth not available after Windows 10 upgrade. The bluetooth is enabled. I used Driver Talent to scan my computer and it said my bluetooth needed to repaired. I followed the tips to fix the bluetooth driver. The bluetooth works after reboot. So bluetooth driver update might be also a solution.

I have a Dell 64-bit, Windows 8.1, Inspiron 5555 and can’t find where to update the drivers. Even on Dell’s site I can find where it will search for drivers that need to be updated but it just finds something not relevant to bluetooth. Please help!
