It only started yesterday, but I have not installed any new software within the last few weeks. I have had no trouble with the system until yesterday.

Hi,

In a worst case scenario the error message “whea uncorrectable error” you get on a blue screen while running Windows could be caused by any number of hardware failures like : Hard drive not responding, your RAM memory not responding or your main board is not working correctly.

Here are some solutions for solving this error:

Solution 1 – Disable Overclock in BIOS

The most common fix for whea_uncorrectable_error is disabling overclock from your BIOS. To do that, just follow these steps:
  1. Open Start Menu and go to Settings
  2. Go to Update and Security, and then to Recovery tab
  3. Click on Advanced Startup and your computer will restart
  4. On advanced startup, Go to Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options and then UEFI Firmware Settings
  5. Click Restart
  6. After the computer is restarted, it should open BIOS automatically, so go Advanced tab
  7. Than to Performance, and look for Overclocking
  8. Make sure overclocking is disabled
  9. Save changes to BIOS (by pressing F10 on your keyboard), and start your computer normally

Solution 2 – Start Windows in Safe Mode and Check for Drivers

  1. Reboot or close the Windows 8.1 PC
  2. When the PC starts press “F8” on the keyboard or another combination would be “Shift + F8”.
  3. The “Recovery Mode” should start.
  4. From within the “Recovery Mode” you need to select “Safe Mode” by following the instructions on the screen.
  5. After the Computer boots up in “Safe Mode”, hover the mouse to the right side of the screen and click in the search box in the start menu.
  6. Type in the search box “Device Manager
  7. After “Device Manager” is opened we need to update the drivers one by one. This way we will see if one of our drivers has caused this error to appear.
  8. After updating the drivers we need to reboot the PC.
  9. See if you get the same error message.

Solution 3 – Check if There Are Any Hardware Issues

  1. Enter “Safe mode”.
  2. Click Start.
  3. In search window type 'cmd' and ENTER. Right click and select 'Run as administrator'.
  4. Type at the command prompt CHKDSK /P and press ENTER to scan the disk.
  5. Then type CHKDSK C: /F /R and press ENTER to repair corrupt sectors, if there are any.
  6. Once chkdsk completes, boot to the desktop and then check.

Solution 4 – Rum Windows Memory Diagnostics

  1. To check the Hardware memory we need to go on the “Start screen” of the Windows 8.1
  2. Type in the search box “Windows Memory Diagnostic”.
  3. Click (left click) on “Windows Memory Diagnostic
  4. Let the “Windows Memory Diagnostic” run, if you get any stops along the way like in the hard drive check with errors then try to replace the memory.
I hope this helps in solving the problem.

Lokesh

Hi Denn,

Please read below.

ERROR NAME: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR

STOP Code: 0x00000124

A guide to the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR Blue Screen of Death
What this error looks like on Windows versions before 8. Notice that the error name isn’t displayed.A guide to the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR Blue Screen of Death
What this error looks like on Windows 8.You’ve got a Blue Screen of Death error called WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR, sometimes shown as a code with 124 at the end. So there’s bad news and good news.
The bad news is, WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR means your hardware has encountered an uncorrectable error, just like it says. This is a very serious issue, but before you go and buy a new machine, you may want to try and figure out what you can do. The error is only uncorrectable by Windows itself, however — your work here could correct this error by either replacing the part in question or reverting to a previous driver, if it’s, say, a graphics card causing the issue. That’s the good news.
As always, the first thing you want to do is a driver check, if your system is still somewhat operational. You can, of course, install Driver Reviver to simplify this process — if you do, run it before you enter Safe Mode. If not, try to boot into Safe Mode when you turn on your computer — Shift+F8 on Windows 8, and F8 or another, manufacturer-specific key on earlier versions of Windows. To navigate to Safe Mode on Windows 8, you’ll need to go to Advanced Launch Options, which’ll reboot your computer and give you a list of options to choose from. Pick Safe Mode, of course.

Press 6 to boot into Safe Mode. After that, open your Start Menu/Screen and search for Device Manager and launch it. Update each one of your drivers or, if a driver update caused this error, roll back the driver of whatever caused this error.
Other probable causes of this issue are a failing hard drive, which can be checked with chkdsk, or failing memory, which can be checked with Windows Memory Diagnostic.
To run chdsk or Windows Memory Diagnostic, open your Start Menu/Start Screen and search for either.

Finding chkdsk in the Start Menu. This works for Windows Memory Diagnostic as well, and is even simpler in Windows 8 — just open the Start Screen and start typing.
If either of these encounter an error when running, you’ll know which part needs replacing — if they don’t, you shouldn’t encounter any errors upon rebooting your computer, but if you do, that means another aspect of your hardware- — your power supply or, god forbid, your motherboard — has failed.
If either your power supply or motherboard has failed, contact your device manufacturer to find out your options. A motherboard failure means you can still use your parts, but they’ll have to be in another machine (and you may have to purchase Windows again) and a power supply failure means you’ll just need to have it replaced.
