Ubuntu 12.04 with Dell inspiron laptop.
All processes get stopped but it doesn't turn off.
Fan still runs and sound can be heard. Screen goes blank only.
Sometimes this happens because you’ve installed another distro after installing Ubuntu. The below steps may help you inspect the problem:
service --status-all: lists all services registered with the system. Services that start with OS boot will have a [+] symbol before them.
Read the log messages that appear on the screen when you press the power button to manually power off. The messages may also appear if you press some random keys.
Review the programs you installed recently, maybe one of them is causing the problem.
Try closing all unnecessary processes and see if you can shut down normally. If you can, repeat the process, narrowing down the candidates, till you reach the buggy app.
In order to solve the problem you can follow the below points. Type in terminal:
sudo -i (to get a root shell, sudo gedit is not recommended)
gedit /etc/default/grub
Find the line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
Change this to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force"
I kept getting the blue screen with Driver Power State Failure error message and then my computer would restart. I found your product and it did not happen any more. I just purchased an anti-virus (kaspersky) and now it is doing it again. It is so frustrating. My computer is only 6 months old. It is a Asus desktop.
