The process sdservice.exe is known as ThinkVantage System Update Service from Lenovo Company Limited. ThinkVantage System Update (TVSU) is an important updating tool for Lenovo ThinkPad systems that include the BIOS and drivers. The BIOS (basic input/output system) is the first software run by a PC when it is powered on. It initializes and tests the system hardware components and installs the operating system or other programs from a mass memory device. It provides a consistent way for the operating system and application programs to interact with the display, keyboard, and other input/output devices. The software is specifically designed to work with each particular model of computer, and for ThinkPad systems, the BIOS contents is stored on an EEPROM chip so that the contents can be rewritten without removing the chip from the motherboard. This enables users of ThinkPad to upgrade the system to add new features or fix bugs using TVSU.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. sdservice.exe. is used by TVSU, If you shut down sdservice.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop sdservice.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is TVSU, from your system.
