The lanutil.exe process is an executable file that is associated with the program files and modules used by the Sony VAIO Smart Network software, which is a utility application bundled with the firmware and driver software distributions that are packaged with certain Sony VAIO laptops. This means the lanutil.exe process is also included in these firmware and driver software distributions. Whenever the system or the user requests for access to certain functionalities that correspond to the network hardware device configurations and settings of the supported Sony VAIO laptop, the system and those firmware and driver software components activate the lanutil.exe process, which in turn calls on other program files and modules in order to load the Sony VAIO Smart Network program unto the system.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. lanutil.exe. is used by Sony VAIO Smart Network, If you shut down lanutil.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop lanutil.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Sony VAIO Smart Network, from your system.
