what is a .sma file?

Developer files used by AMX Mod wherein AMX Mod is a plug-in allowing the writing of scripts for Half Life Games like Counter Strike, with the use of a scripting language known as Compuphase's SmallC. SMA files contain the plug-in source codes and they are used to modify Half Life games. Compiling SMA files into a binary plug-in file allows these files to be used by the program and since they contain scripts, they are responsible for allowing AMX Mod to either make changes or enhance Half Life games such as the most popular first person shooter game called Counter Strike. SMA files make these games work but it is not only the AMX mod that supports this file extension as AMX Mod X can also be used to open SMA files. However, the plug-in files used by AMX Mod X are not saved using SMA extension. Instead, they use the AMXX extension while the compiled plug-ins used by AMX Mod use .AMX file extension.

AMX Mod

AMX Mod (Abstract Machine eXecutive Modification) is a Metamod plugin which allow users to write modifications for Half-Life with Small scripting Language. Metamod is a modified DLL (Direct Link Library) that replaces the stock version and allows external plug-ins (such as AMX) to interface with the game. It is a plugin/ DLL manager between the Half-Life Engine and an HL Game mod. Half Life (HL) is a science fiction video game developed by Valve Corporation for Windows PCs, and PlayStation 2. Versions for Mac OS X and Linus ports became available in January 2013. The game is a first-person shooter that requires players to perform puzzle solving and combat tasks to advance through the game. Metamod allows the dynamic loading/unloading of mod-like DLL plug-ins to add functionality to the HL server or game mod. Installing AMX Mod require the installation of MetaMod. Downloading Metamod requires Windows or Linux operating systems.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .sma files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .sma. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
