Microsoft Works needs to possess the latest updates and the process wkdetect.exe is in charge of making an online check of updates that are available in the Internet. When the EXE file locates the updates, it controls the downloading process and asks the user to install these updates. These updates are automatically loaded by wkdetect.exe to Microsoft Works to enhance the main feature of the latter as being a Microsoft organizer utility. Microsoft Works provides the user a tool to organize his or her schedules, task lists and finances. The user can create letters, resumes, greeting cards and other documents using the software. Wkdetect.exe has given the software the features of the usual word processing program. It consists of templates that can be set, a spell and grammar checker and a built-in dictionary. There is even a big space for contacts list which is stored in a database that is easy to use.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. wkdetect.exe. is used by Microsoft Works Update Detection, If you shut down wkdetect.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop wkdetect.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Microsoft Works Update Detection, from your system.
