The winio.sys file is a system process distributed as the WinIO library. The winio.sys process is referenced by certain EXE program files, specific background process items, some DLL (Dynamic Link Library) modules, other SYS driver utilities and components of various 32-bit built-in and third party Windows applications. The winio.sys file and the WinIO library provide resources that are required by these 32-bit built-in and third party Windows programs to gain direct access to the physical memory and I/O ports of the Windows-based computer. The winio.sys file is implemented into the system upon the installation of the firmware distributions and driver software components of certain motherboards that are embedded with 32-bit support for direct I/O port and RAM application access. This means the winio.sys file is bundled with the installer packages of these associated motherboard firmware components and driver software resources.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. winio.sys. is used by WinIO Library, If you shut down winio.sys, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop winio.sys, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is WinIO Library, from your system.

After uninstalling applications it is a good idea to scan you Windows registry for any left over traces of applications. Registry Reviver by ReviverSoft is a great tool for doing this.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as WinIO Library, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application.
