What is  w3wp.exe

The file w3wp.exe is related to application pools in IIS, or Internet Information Services. The file is actually the one handling the queries and requests forwarded to an Internet server for a determined application pool. If you notice several w3wp.exe files running, this is probably because you have sent out several requests for different application pools. It is determined that for every application pool, there would be at least one w3wp.exe file that will respond to the request. In fact, there were times when users encountered the w3wp.exe file more than twenty times at a time. The process’ file size is about 6.5 KB. Process name is IIS Worker Process, and is generally installed with the software for IIS, or ISS Application Pool Process. The file and the software are licensed under Microsoft. The file can be disabled, along with the software that installed it, if the user will no longer require the applications associated with the software. This is a non-system file, and is not required to run in order to have the system running smoothly.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. w3wp.exe. is used by IIS Worker Process, If you shut down w3wp.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop w3wp.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is IIS Worker Process, from your system.
