The hphupd08.exe process is an executable file that serves as the program dispatcher of the HP Photosmart Updater applet, which is a small application that is integrated into the HP Photosmart software. The HP Photosmart software activates the hphupd08.exe process when a user requests for access to the updating features built into the HP Photosmart program. The hphupd08.exe process then initializes other required program files, modular system resources and application-specific modules, in order to load the HP Photosmart Updater applet unto the system. The hphupd08.exe process and the other program files of the HP Photosmart Updater applet are normally found in the same application folder where the HP Photosmart software was installed, which is usually a sub directory under the Program Files folder of the system partition. Upon loading the HP Photosmart Updater applet unto the system, the user is prompted for recent update releases of the HP Photosmart software that can be automatically downloaded and installed in the system to update the currently installed version of the HP Photosmart program, and this is done with the consent of the user.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. hphupd08.exe. is used by HP Photosmart Updater, If you shut down hphupd08.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop hphupd08.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is HP Photosmart Updater, from your system.
