The file hkvolkey.dll, known as vk detecter for volume up/down keys, belongs to software On Screen Display by Lenovo Group. The process hkvolkey.dll is loaded as a dll (direct link library) module within the process tposdsvc.exe through run-time dynamic linking. This program displays the results of using the ThinkPad function keys on the desktop screen, and also provides some enhancements to the ThinkPad Function keys. The models of ThinkPad computers supported by the dll file hkvolkey.dll are ThinkPad 240Z*1, ThinkPad 570E/600E/X, ThinkPad A20p, A20m, A21e, A21m, A21p, A22m, A22p, ThinkPad T20, T21, T22, thinkPad X20, X21, ThinkPad S30 (Supports Windows 95/98/Me/NT4.0/2000 only), and TransNote (Supports Windows 98/Me/2000/XP only). The On Screen Display Program for Lenovo was previously installed during the installation of the ThinkPad Configuration Utility but with the latest versions of this program, the OSD must be installed with its own setup program.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. hkvolkey.dll. is used by Lenovo On Screen Display, If you shut down hkvolkey.dll, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop hkvolkey.dll, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Lenovo On Screen Display, from your system.
