The file googletoolbar1.dll, known as Google IE Client Toolbar, belongs to software Google Toolbar, which is an Internet browser toolbar that is available only for Internet Explorer and Firefox. The toolbar is located at the top of the browser's tab bar and provides the user with a search box to carry out Web searches. It allows direct access to the Google search functionality from any webpage and automatically locates search terms on the Web page with each word highlighted in its color. Google features a number of tools for the user, which include Autofill that enables auto-completion of Web forms with information saved into the computer, BlogThis for posting of links to Blogger.com weblogs, and AutoLink for a US address on a Web page to a Google map, package tracking, and links for iSBN numbers. Other features that have been included to the later versions of the toolbar are the Quick Search Box feature that provides search functionality outside of the browser, and Sidewiki that allows users to make comments on any Web page.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. googletoolbar1.dll. is used by Google Toolbar, If you shut down googletoolbar1.dll, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop googletoolbar1.dll, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Google Toolbar, from your system.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as Google Toolbar, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
