The file gator.exe, known as Gator Client Application, belongs to software GAIN by Gain Publishing. GAIN is an adware program that displays and downloads advertisements using the Gator Client application. The Gator Client monitors the user's browsing activity, and floods the user with intrusive popup advertisements. It also has the ability to attach a toolbar or search bar to the browser without the user's knowledge and approval, or hijack the default homepage and settings, making it difficult for the user to replace the original settings. GAIN is usually installed as a component of some freeware that the user has downloaded and installed in the computer. GAIN stands for Gator Advertising Information Network, and is not exactly dangerous but it consumes the computer's resources without providing any benefit the user. This software is considered a security risk since it tracks Web usage to better target ads that are served to the user as popups.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. gator.exe. is used by GAIN, If you shut down gator.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start.
