Most anti-virus programs and user reviews have classified the avifil.dll file as a malware. Kaspersky identifies this DLL file as Rootkit.Win32.Podnuha.y. This file appears as avifil.dll on Windows Task Manager. There is no indication of the copyright holder or the product name for this file. The location for this file is in the folder C:\Windows\System32. This file has various known sizes including 92,416 bytes and 91,904 bytes that has 25% occurrence. This dynamically loaded or linked file acts as a BHO or browser helper object that loads automatically when you start the Internet browser. BHOs are usually not blocked by personal firewalls because the firewall will identify it as the browser itself. This is the reason why it is often used by malware such as adware and spyware. Among the IDs associated with this BHO include C90F4226-C6BB-43AD-A236-5AF10E75507A and A99CAB61-FC93-440C-B598-57C4417CFDB1. There is no visible window for this process. It is not a core file for Windows. It can change the behavior of Internet Explorer. It can inject codes into processes. It may also terminate or execute a process. Most reports on this file have considered it as unsafe.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. avifil.dll. is used by Rootkit.Win32.Podnuha.y, If you shut down avifil.dll, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start.
