The executable process file, afsd_service.exe, is also associated as Open AFS Client Service or AFS Client Daemon that is considered to be a part of the software, Open AFS for Windows as developed by Open AFS Project. It is known to be running in the Task Manager as the process afsd_service.exe that features no visible window and is not basically identified as a Windows system file, although it is considered to be digitally signed. The process file afsd_service.exe is found to be located in C:\apps\openafs\client\program file and is further seen in the subfolder C:\Program File with a file size on Windows 7 or XP as 353,776 bytes (21% of all incidences), 429,928 bytes and 7 other variants. One of its functions has the ability to monitor applications. It therefore requires the utilization of ports in order to connect to the Internet and to the Local Area Network or LAN.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. afsd_service.exe. is used by Open AFS, If you shut down afsd_service.exe, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop afsd_service.exe, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Open AFS, from your system.

After uninstalling applications it is a good idea to scan you Windows registry for any left over traces of applications. Registry Reviver by ReviverSoft is a great tool for doing this.

A process usually a part of an installed application such as Open AFS, or your operating system that is responsible for running in functions of that application. Some application require that they have processes running all the time so they can do things such as check for updates or notify you when you get an instant message. Some poorly written applications have many processes that run that may not be required and take up valuable processing power within your computer.
