AFD Driver for Winsock is the process that has afd.sys as its executable file. This is a system file installed by Windows OS software. This is an important system file that should be allowed to run the moment you open your computer. The file is responsible for connecting your PC to networking services, specifically TCP/IP. Without this file, uses will not be able to connect to the Internet. It is also used to connect and load files via FTP. The file has a standard image disk location of C:\Windows\System 32\Drivers\afd.sys. Corrupted afd.sys files could cause system errors or Blue Screen of Death. The size of the file is between 131,968 bytes and 138,496 bytes. The file was found to be incompatible with updated versions of some AV software, as well as gaming software. Microsoft addressed te problem by providing update guidelines for specific AV software. Updating the afd.sys file or disabling the gaming software generally resolved the issue.

Most non-system processes that are running can be stopped because they are not involved in running your operating system. afd.sys. is used by Microsot Windows, If you shut down afd.sys, it will likely start again at a later time either after you restart your computer or after an application start. To stop afd.sys, permanently you need to uninstall the application that runs this process which in this case is Microsot Windows, from your system.
